Cato Springs is southwest of Fayetteville and named for John Henry and Jacob Cato, brothers who homesteaded the area around the springs in 1849. It has also been referenced as Cato’s Spring.
John Branner, state geologist, wrote in his 1888 description of Washington County that “Cato’s Spring” was another name for “Big Spring,” near the intersection of Spring Street and Willow Avenue, but this must have been an error.
