In the valley between the foothills of Kessler Mountain on the west and McCollum’s Mountain on the east is a slight syncline of limestone and sandstone strata, across which the present-day Cato Springs Road and Cato Springs Branch run.
A syncline is where rock strata have dipped, creating a trough.
