The city deeded property east and south of the then-new water tower at the east end of Baxter Street to the Fayetteville Girl Scout Council in 1950 for its use as a retreat.
A stone-clad building on the grounds was remodeled and dedicated as the Girl Scout Little House on May 20, 1951.
The grounds also included a softball “field” with backstop. The field was an expanse of exposed shale with home plate at the north end and bases extending westerly and south.
The building fell into disrepair by the latter 1960s and its roof fell in sometime in the 1970s. The property has since reverted to city ownership, and all that’s left of the building are foundation stones.
