Numbered streets in Fayetteville run east-west and are only found south of the city center. Initially the numbering began with a First Street that ran along the south side of the fifth block south of the Fayetteville Square.
There was also a Second Street, Third Street and Fourth Street, each a block a block south of the previous.
Because of postal standards, though, these streets had to be renumbered, starting from the Square. The named streets kept their names, so the earliest street to be affected was the old First Street, which became today’s Fifth Street with each subsequent street becoming a larger number reflecting the street’s approximate number of blocks south of the square. The numbered circles and courts are on South Mountain.
