Millsap Mountain

This mountain west of Interstate 49 and north of U.S. 62 was named for the Millsap family, which owned property on the northwest part of the mountain during the 19th century and early 20th century. The mountain’s name appears as early as the 1888 Arkansas geological survey map of Washington County.

The family name shows up in land records and census records as Millsap or Milsap, without an “s” on the end. An “s” is added on many maps and might have started as the possessive Millsap’s, but then the apostrophe got lost at some point.

The gravestone of one of the family members, Bird Millsaps, includes the “s,” but the rest of the family’s gravestones at Mount Comfort Cemetery do not.

In 2018, the city purchased two large tracts of land comprising woodland hillsides and open pasture on top of the mountain for creation of Centennial Park, a mountain-biking park with a cyclocross race course. The park has hosted national and international competitions in downhill mountain-biking and cyclocross since.
