August 11 – Jail break; Daly wins PGA

1845 — Five or six people broke into the Washington County Jail at about 10 a.m. this day and freed Thomas Bridgwood, who had been charged with horse stealing and murder. Previously, Bridgwood had escaped with a Cherokee prisoner. "The Indian, like a man of sense has gone to parts unknown, but Bridgwood, like a fool, as he is, lurked in the neighborhood and was retaken the other day at a camp-meeting," the Arkansas Gazette reported. "The altar was no refuge to him."
1991 — John Daly, a former All-America golfer for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, won the PGA Championship on this day at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.
