Built in 1905, the Old Washington County Courthouse is believed to be the fifth courthouse of the county. Built at the intersection of College Avenue and Center Street, the courthouse was designed by the architect Charles Thompson. As can be seen from this post card, the steps of the courthouse entrance originally came straight forward down to edge of College Avenue. When the street was widened, the entrance was redesigned so that stairs came up from both sides of the portico. This post card, circa 1950, was never mailed. It was printed in Boston, Massachusetts, for S&S News Service Company, which was based in Fort Smith but which operated a newsstand on Dickson Street in Fayetteville.
