During the latter part of the 19th century, J.E. Vaughn operated at livery on the south side of Mountain Street about halfway between Block Avenue and Church Avenue.

Vaughn and a partner took over operation of an existing livery at the southwest corner of the Square in 1973 and brought in additional teams and buggies.
By the next year, Vaughn had bought out his earlier partner. He also expanded the operation that year to include a line of hacks running between Fayetteville and Vinita in the Indian Territory, present-day Oklahoma. Vinita was on the rail lines of both the Atlantic & Pacific Railway and the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway.
By 1887, Vaughn also took on management of the Eclipse Stable, immediately west of the City Hotel on Mountain Street.
He bought a second livery in Dallas, Texas, in 1890, and his son Robert Vaughn took over managing the Fayetteville operation.
