South Mountain is a mile due south of the Fayetteville Square.

During the 19th century, this mountain was named Baxter Mountain on geological maps, an apparent reference to the Brooks-Baxter War of the early 1870s, in which the two Reconstruction-era candidates for governor in 1873 both claimed victory and, along with their partisans, got into a shooting match.

The slightly taller Puddin’ Hill to the east was labeled Brooks Mountain on the maps, perhaps showing which side of the conflict Fayetteville residents, or the geographers, favored.

South Mountain is also colloquially referred to as “Country Club Hill” due to the long-time presence of the Fayetteville Country Club on top of it.

The mountain is loosely bounded by City Lake Road on the east, 19th Street on the north, School Avenue on the west and Willoughby Road on the south.
