Red Hill is roughly bounded by Evelyn Hills Shopping Center and Lake Lucille on the north, College Avenue on the west, Prospect Street on the south and Mission Boulevard on the east.
During the latter 19th and first half of the 20th century, several African American families lived on the hill, and its name was applied to one of the of the four historic Black neighborhoods in Fayetteville.
The southeast part of the hill had a relatively rare biodiversity for Fayetteville due to an exposed hillside of shale. Prickly pear cacti were indigenous to the drier, less fertile hillside.
The local Girl Scout troops used the site for summer camp and had a stone cabin on the eastern side of the hill.
It has also been referred to as Waneeta Heights, Clay Yoe’s Hill, Water Tower Hill, and Suicide Hill at various times.
