Puddin’ Hill is a mountain on the south side of Fauetteville, between Black Oak Road on the east and Morningside Drive on the west.
In the 19th century, geological maps of Washington County referred to the hill as Brooks Mountain, a reference to the 1873 Brooks-Baxter War in which two Reconstruction-era candidates for governor both claimed victory and wound up in a shooting match that was settled by President Ulysses S. Grant.
The nearby larger mountain, today known as South Mountain, was at the time called Baxter Mountain, apparently a way for the residents in Fayetteville to show which side of the dispute they favored.
At its highest point, Puddin Hill is 1,562 feet above sea level.
Origin of its name, Puddin’ Hill, is so far unknown.
