The “Lilburn Station” was a train stop on the St. Louis & San Francisco Railway main line between Fayetteville and Johnson. It was described as a platform with a small storeroom and was near the present-day intersection of North Gregg Avenue and Sunbridge Street.
Although passengers could board at Lilburn, the stop was primarily used for shipping produce, including strawberries. The 1908 plat of Washington County used the name Lilburn Station, but other documents also referred to it as “Lilburn Switch” and “Lilburn Spur,” suggesting the location included a rail siding. The nearby area surrounding this site was referred to as the Appleby community.
In the 1906 Soil Survey of the Fayetteville Area, Arkansas, the authors describe one of the areas in the county with the most extensive example of Gasconade silt loam being “scattered through the limestone formation” as being just north of Lilburn.
