Charlene Daugherty, age 86, of Fayetteville passed away Saturday February 4, 2023. She was born May 8, 1936, in Fayetteville to Toy and Mabel (Huffman) Riggins.
After graduating from Fayetteville High School, she went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of Arkansas. Charlene went on to become a teacher at Fayetteville Public Schools where she taught for over 40 years.
Charlene married Jack Daugherty Sr. on October 12, 1957. She gave birth to a son, Jackie Daugherty Jr. on December 8, 1958.
Charlene was known for her love of horses and passion for teaching. Her work ethic was unmatched and her support of her friends and family was unwavering. Charlene was a horsewoman, whether it was barrel racing or horse racing, she loved a fast horse. She was one of the founding members of the Girl’s Rodeo Association in Arkansas, a group that paved the way for women to participate in professional rodeos. If she wasn’t at home taking care of her horses, she was on the road with her granddaughter to a barrel race or headed to a basketball game. Her hope was that her legacy and love of horses would be passed on for many generations. This dream was realized when her great granddaughters started riding, “Meme” was there for the first ride and every ride after. Charlene’s other great passion was teaching. She was known for her dedication and her discipline in the classroom. She was tough and would stand up for what she believed in but was thoughtful and giving to everyone.
She was preceded by in death by her husband, Jack Daugherty Sr.; her son, Jackie Daugherty and her sister, Judith Ann Riggins. She is survived by her brother, John Riggins and his wife Michelle of Conway; granddaughter, Kaylee Russell and her husband Ryan of Fayetteville; two great grandchildren, Madyson Russell and Maebry Russell.
Visitation will be 5–7 p.m. Wednesday at Moore’s Chapel. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Moore’s Chapel with a graveside service 2 p.m. Thursday at Eureka Springs Cemetery under the direction of Moore’s Chapel.
