1855 — Two recent immigrants to Fayetteville — a millwright named John McPherson and an architect named G.D. Baker — began offering their services on this day.
2004 — Veronica Campbell, a University of Arkansas runner from Jamaica, won the Olympic gold medal in the 200-meter dash on this day, her second medal of the games. Her time at the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens was 22.05 seconds.
