1948 — Clyde Scott became the first Fayetteville resident to win an
Olympic medal on this day. Scott, who grew up in Smackover, Ark., and
was attending the university at the time, finished with the silver
medal in the 110-meter high hurdles, just fractions of a second behind
the gold medalist, Bill Porter. Craig Dixon took the bronze to give the
Americans a sweep in the event.
