1835

Elias Cornelius Boudinot was born on this day in Floyd County, Georgia. Boudinot later lived in Fayetteville, publishing The Arkansian newspaper prior to the Civil War, serving as secretary to the Arkansas secession convention, rising to colonel in the Confederate Army and then representing the Cherokee nation in meetings with Congress after the war.

1836

Archibald Yell, the circuit judge living in Fayetteville at the time of statehood, was elected the state’s first U.S. representative and began serving in Congress on this day.

1871

African-American residents in Fayetteville celebrated the
anniversary of British emancipation on this day with a march through
the streets and speeches at the picnic grounds.

1946

Astronaut Richard Covey was born at Fayetteville on this day.

1965

Two historical markers were dedicated this day at Mount Comfort to recognize two early schools — the Far West Seminary and the Ozark Institute.
