Old Main

This rare post card of Old Main on the University of Arkansas campus shows an aerial stretched between the north and south towers. The antennae is believed to have been erected by Loy Barton, a graduate student at the university who was a pioneer in development of AM radio. It created quite a stir among faculty who weren’t sure about the wisdom of using the main building as a radio receiver. Their worries didn’t last long, though, because a storm soon brought the aerial down. This card, which was postally unused, was printed by C.T. American Art.
