Deena Drossin Kastor, a former Fayetteville resident and University of Arkansas runner, set the women’s American record for marathons and won the London Marathon on this day. Finishing in a time of 2:19:36, she became the first American woman and one of only eight women at the time to run a marathon in under two hours and twenty minutes.
Drossin ran distance races and cross country for the UA where she was a four-time SEC champion and eight-time All American and won bronze at the Olympics.
