‘Bill’ Martin Jr.

William Harry ‘Bill’ Martin Jr., 69, of Fayetteville died October 2001 at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville.

He was born December 6, 1931, in Stamps, Ark., to Harry Martin Sr. and Gladys Ward Martin.

He was a band director, retiring from Woodland Junior High School in 1989 and had also taught band previously in Hot Springs, where he was Bill Clinton’s first band director.

He was a music director at Immanuel Baptist Church for 14 years. He was also a music director at Calvary Baptist Church, at Berryville Baptist Church and Elmdale Baptist Church.

He directed the Sons of Jubai, a men’s singing group, and was a member of the First Baptist Church choir for several years. He taught science for several years before his retirement. He was a member and former president of the Evening Lions Club, where he had been chosen National Lion of the Year and had received the Melton Jones Fellow award.

He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Davis Martin of the home, three sons Bruce Martin of Edmond, Oklahoma. Brian Martin of Plano, Texas, and Brent Martin of Wichita, Kansas, one daughter Melodie Dennis of Wichita, 10 grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Fayetteville. Burial in Mount Comfort Cemetery.
